  An Introduction

Process integration, flexible organisation, distributed locations, fast introduction of new technologies, development of partnership potential, broadly based communication and control capability - these key words sum up the requirements that today's software solutions must fulfil. The same requirements apply to product data and document management systems. Moreover recent years have seen an increasing tendency to extend PLM system functions to cover a product's entire life cycle. However, this has led to an explosion in complexity of PLM data on which company divisions depend and this in turn forces the introduction of continuous evaluation for all information managed by the PLM system.

In many off-the-shelf PLM systems, however, these controlling and monitoring functions are their greatest flaw. Modern PLM systems thus combine a wide array of information plus its rules and relations, providing a framework within which all data is organised according to its content, status or meaning. The rules and relations enable the system to track the effects of changes on the products managed, and supply it with current and automatic 'knowledge' of

  where which part is used
who produced, supplied and installed the part
how and by whom it was developed
who is initiating, is responsible for or is planning changes

Most projects are driven by changes. These changes will be raised by technical progress, the need to reduce costs, additional requirements and several other reasons. Changes must be monitored continuously. This leads to an increasing demand on project management procedures, which monitor and control progress, budget and the schedule of projects.

Standard software solutions which are based on flexible concepts and which are customizable in order to meet customer requirements help to reduce costs. They keep you aware of all planned, actual and implemented changes. This approach was conceptualized by former EIGNER Inc., Boston, (now Agile) co-operating with usb, Munich. With Agile PLM-CM they developed a Configuration Management (CM) module based on usb's many years of experience in the aerospace and defence industries. This module is fully integrated into the Agile PLM-CM product data and document management system, and enables projects to be developed, planned, implemented and tracked with full reliability. As a result, continuously updated product configuration information is guaranteed throughout the product's life cycle, which in turn benefits costs and product quality.
