Product Lifecycle Management or Configuration Management ?

The answer is quite simple: Product Lifcycle Management (PLM) without Configuration Management (CM) is not complete.

If you want to have comprehensive and complete data and information about the status of ongoing processes or a complete view about the actual physical and functional configuration of your product you need the rules and procedures of Configuration Management.

Product Lifecycle Management as it is seen nowadays focuses on existing processes and on the management of electronic documentation, files and images created via CAD/CAE systems. On its own this is not sufficient to achieve the desired goal of clear, concise and valid product information.

CM is a discipline keeping the global view of a project providing the missing link in a PLM solution by extending the focus to coordination, identification, change control, status accounting and auditing of all necessary data and information. This also includes costs, schedules, workflow procedures and processes. It starts with the contract.

With Configuration Management you can assure a synchronization between requirements, documentation, parts and modules, standards and change data from design to manufacture, support and management.
