  Why Configuration Management ?

An important characteristic of CM is the labeling of the product to be produced as a configuration item, or CI. All activities in the framework of a CM system are directed at being able to provide information about the makeup, i.e. the configuration, of a product at any given point in its lifetime. In addition, information is collected concerning the activities which led to each configuration. This document trail is very important for a number of reasons, not the least of which are product liability concerns.

As the configurations are observed successively, the concept of "change" becomes a recurring theme - change is in fact an unavoidable element in any project. Changes are made as a result of technical progress, cost reduction measures, new requirements, new market conditions or new legislative guidelines. Changes must be constantly monitored and documented. More and more enterprises are therefore being forced to adopt project management procedures like comprehensive Configuration Management.

Configuration Management eliminates duplication of effort and keeps effective control over all your planned, in-progress and implemented activities, items and changes. It provides a reliable and unambiguous source for the engineering, planning and production process, ensuring visible and predictable quality and low life cycle costs for your product.

Configuration Management ensures that you have clear, concise and valid data and information at any time, thus creating the necessary baseline for your success.
